Tracking Snow Leopard in the Mountain

Also known as, “Ghost of the Mountain” Snow Leopard Panthera uncia, is listed as a vulnerable cat. In Nepal, they inhabit alpine and sub-alpine regions of the country with rocky and mountain cliffs.

For this lifetime experience trip, we will take you behind the Annapurna massive, located on the north of Pokhara valley through normal or  restricted area (Nar Phu)and other shorter along the popular Classic Annapurna trail. The and longer version is  not very crowded and has the essence of ancient lifestyle and culture. At the same time you will not miss the spectacular mountain views, high pass and beautiful scenery. This trekking experience with the Snow Leopard tracking, makes it a great journey of lifetime.

The shorter version is just great in winter and early spring, perfect for the people with less time and want to travel in less tourist season.

Among few countries in the world, Nepal is proud to have in our mountains. In Nepal, they are also found in Dolpo, Dolakha and Kanchenjunga area mainly in small numbers.

Snow Leopards area seriously threatened by poaching and their habitat loss. Bringing more people to protect is the aim, we all should do, so that they can live naturally. Tourism, does have some impacts but can also help in awareness and education. Tourism is very important for livelihood of the local community of the area and can contribute in their conservation.  Snow Leopard also, truly deserve to be here along with human! Let’s go admire this beautiful being and spread the word to protect them, not just for present but for future generations to come (human and Snow Leopard).

Tracking Snow Leopard! 

In Nepal, among many locations, the Nar Phu valley in Manang, is the haven for this elusive and charismatic Himalayan cat. The density of Snow Leopard, is 6 individual per 100 square km. The main wild prey, Blue Sheep’s density is 8 individual per square km. So far, this valley is known as, having the highest density of Snow Leopard, in the country and hence the chance of encounter rate is high (approx 90%), that no other parts of the country has. (Source- Thapa et al.2012 and Weggi et al. 2012). At the same time, having said this, in nature it all depends on timing and chance! Who know you might be seeing also seeing the mother leopard with two cubs, a family or even more….
