An ornithological tour that explores the birds of highland and lowland of Nepal
Trip Overview
Nepal is extremely rich in bird diversity, occupying almost 9% of the world’s birds. The diversity of birds decreases as you go towards higher elevation, but there are many special birds that mainly inhabit that particular area. Whereas, lowlands of Nepal are where the most of the birds are recorded in the country.
In this trip, you will tour some of the best parts of the country, exploring the diverse species of birds in Nepal with the stunning snow capped Himalayan view that Nepal is well known. The tour start from the lower Phulchauki Hill, which is the best birding location in Kathmandu valley. The birding hike continues, through the biodiversity rich habitat of Annapurna conservation, that has well over 400 species of birdlife. The other wildlife main includes Rhesus and Langur Monkeys, Yellow-throated Marten, Common Leopard, Muntjac and Himalayan Black and Brown Bears etc.
The Annapurna Conservation area, is also the most popular trekking destination in the country as it is well known for some of the most spectacular and highest mountains of the world (Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks). After this highland experience, you travel down to the finest and the first national park of the country (Chitwan National Park), located in the southern lowlands. This national park has the major wildlife with well over 650 species of birds and unique flora species of the country.
This birding tour, is a great combination to see and experience the BIRDS of the different habitats, a great trip to explore the Nepal’s bird life, enjoying the snowy-capped Himalayan peaks and local cultures.

The Best months for this trip: It depends on entirely what you are looking for. For summer visitors, Mar to May even June before the monsoon season would be great. And for winter visitor and settle weather with great Mountain View it’s, Oct through to month of Jan and Feb. The main migratory when we get more species and number are in winter. Even in the monsoon time (June- Sept) the birds are there, but it may be not so easy to travel around some time!
Bring along: A pair of binocular (8×42 or 10 x 40 recommended) and telescope if possible, Birds of Nepal field guide, pencil/pen and notebook, and camera.
Trip ITINERARY
Day01: Kathmandu arrival
Welcome to Nepal! Upon your arrival in Nepal, meet in Kathmandu airport and transfer to your hotel for overnight. Trip briefing, followed by welcome dinner! Overnight Hotel
Day02: Day in Kathmandu
Day in Kathmandu to explore the birds of Lower Phulchauki Hill- the best birding location nearby. Return and overnight Hotel
Day03: To Pokhara
Travel to Pokhara and explore around, time permitting Overnight hotel
Day04: To Thulo Kharka
Travel to Kande start birding hike through a beautiful forest before arriving at Thulokot, a great place to watch the migratory raptors in autumn and winter season. Arriving there, you will explore the ridge in the around. Overnight at Thulokot
Day05: To Landruk Phedi
Continue to trek and enjoy watching birds along the trail that is mostly through the beautiful forest. There is a great chance of seeing lots of forest birds on the trail including raptors. Landruk phedi village, will be arrived after passing many creeks, farmland villages of Tolka and Landruk itself. Overnight lodge by the river Modi, on the gorge
Day06: To Bhaisi Kharka
The trail climbs steeply to a large Gurung village of Ghandruk, that also is well-known for up close view of some beautiful Himalayan peaks including Fishtail. The trail further continues to climb and gradually climbs to Bhaisi Kharka. We will enjoy many birds and lots of Thrushes with many other species will be to explore before arrive at the overnight place. Overnight lodge at Bhaisi Kharka
Day07: To Deorali
East stroll through the forest and down to creek and along the creek before making a climb. Explore the birds of the forest and creeks such as Thrushes, Bullfinch, Yuhina etc with wildlife such as Himalayan Grey Langur and Muntjac etc. Over at Deorali located on the saddle of the hills
Day08: To Banthanti
The trail on the popular trail drops through the village of Ulleri to Tirkhedhunga and then to Hile and ease along the river and farmland in the valley to arrive at Birethanti, located at the confluence of two rivers, beautiful place. Overnight at Birethanti
Day09: To Birethanti
The trail on the popular trail drops through the village of Ulleri to Tirkhedhunga and then to Hile and ease along the river and farmland in the valley to arrive at Birethanti, located at the confluence of two rivers, beautiful place. Overnight at Birethanti
Day10: To Kande, Naudanda and Pokhara
Leaving Birethanti, the trail climbs to Chandrakot and ease out Lumle and Kande, from where we will get our private vehicle to Pokhara. On the way we will explore some area, on the ridge, wonderful for raptors Overnight at Pokhara in hotel
Day11: To Chitwan
Travel to wildlife resort by the Chitwan national park. Arrival is followed by lunch and evening nature walk nearby. Explore the birds and area Overnight at Resort
Day12: Day in Chitwan
Full day in Chitwan will be spent to explore the national parks for birds and wildlife Chitwan is the first and the finest national park of the country that is extremely rich in its biodiversity with numerous beautiful and endangered birdlife. The exploration can be done by walk and jeep ride. Overnight lodge
Day13: Day in Chitwan
Full day in Chitwan will be spent to explore the national parks for birds and wildlife Chitwan is the first and the finest national park of the country that is extremely rich in its biodiversity with numerous beautiful and endangered birdlife. Day14: Return Kathmandu
Travel back to Kathmandu On the way (winter time) we can stop to explore the Trsihuli river for this iconic species Ibisbill before arriving Kathmandu. Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel for the overnight.
Day15: Return Kathmandu
Day in Kathmandu to explore some world heritage sites and afternoon free. Farewell dinner and overnight lodge
Day16: Trips ends in Kathmandu
